Generally speaking, I think we can all agree; sick days are the worst! For the patient and the caretaker, both for different reasons. It’s why today we’re building a sick-day kit for you to have over these germ-infested Winter months. It’s always better to be prepared for when those pesky viruses start knocking on your door.
Sammy and I both loathe our girls getting sick. We actually get anxiety about it, but that issue, that’s for a whole other post. Evidently everyone in the house loses sleep. We do everything in our power to help them get better, and ensure they’re comfortable while the germ passes.
Surely we’ve found a few things that work, and many that don’t, believe you me. But the one thing that we have found that helps everyone in the situation is being better prepared. I’ve built our family a sick-day kit that helps us fight back through cold and flu season and above all comforts both Sam and I knowing we’re ready.
First things first;
Find a good little kit. Have it be a basket, container or a small handbag (so that you can easily take it on the go). We have our’s in a small wicker basket that stays in the medicine cabinet, in our kitchen. I try to remember to check it often to replace things that are out-dated or need replacing. But keeping it someplace in the heart of the house is helpful.
Next is to gather;
Find all the things you already have onhand, and make a list of those things you need. Ensure those items you do, have good dates and start loading up your basket. Our basket is jam-packed and I’m okay with that. I have always been on for being over-prepared. Don’t believe me, travel with me just one time and you’ll see.
Let’s dive into what can be found in my families sick-day kit:
- Hand-Sanitizer & Disinfecting Spray
- Bandaids, Wound Care Cleaners & Creams
- Tissues (with lotion) & Vasaline
- hydraSense
- Cough Drops & Honey Losenges
- Redoxon
- Thermometer
- Heating Pad
- Kids Liquid Pain Reliever
- Adults Pain Reliever
And finally, build your immunity;
After building yourself a sick-day kit, now it’s time to ensure you DON’T ever need to use it. Build up that immune-system and do what you can to avoid the fall. Make sure you’re taking those Multivitamins and get all that Vitamin C that your body need. While the girls and I prefer our gummies (One A Day plus Immunity and FLINTSTONES Vitamins plus Immunity) Sammy takes it like a champ and horse-pills it the whole way home (Mens One A Day Multivitamin).
Also, I like to keep a set of some of my favorite Essential Oils onhand. There are some combinations I’ve found that really help with fighting back germs and keep us healthier for longer stretches. I’ve made one into a paste that I really like to use on the girls feet at night. When I hear a bad cold or flu going around I put it on with a cosy set of thick socks. I find it can help build a shield around them for following day.
Another key point that needs mentioning in staying healthy is SLEEP. Sometimes this can be very hard for us parent. After 8pm the day just gets started. But for your children it’s extremely important they rest. Sticking with a routine which has them in bed getting a long solid sleep can also help with avoiding catching germs.
Let’s be honest, if there is one thing you can count on this Winter, it’s catching a cold. Certainly unavoidable I would say, at least in our cases we will be prepared. Right?
