I’m a rule follower, in most cases.
My parents, I respect them, their rules and the reasoning behind them enough to know it was best for me. My school teachers, I aimed to please without going overboard, did what I was asked to the best of my ability, listened in class and respected and appreciated their time and knowledge. My bosses, they said what was expected of me and I would always make sure it was done and a bit more. The cashier at a local u-pick field, not so much.
Hear me out, I respect him, his job and his super helpful pick tips, but following his rules of “no eating the blueberries until after we’ve paid” may have fallen on deaf ears.
U-pick with littles can make for great fun, hilarious (and messy) memories, and a wonderful way to spend a summer morning however instilling fear in my child that she must merely pick the delicious berries without even but one sample, well that was a rule I was willing to break.
Hey! I offered them to weight her on their scale before and after, respectfully paying for the difference, but apparently they don’t make this technology just yet. So in my defense, I did offer to pay for the extras we managed to sneak-off with and I will have you know that when they do upgrade their technology, I am more than willing to buck up for what she ate while she sung her way through picking 2 baskets of fresh blueberries. #badassmom #makesforbadasskids
FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH we do u-pick flowers at the same farm, each of our visits and we never take nearly as many stems as they say we can. So I feel like this evens itself out in the wash. Right? I’m not really a bad person!
If you truly respected the cashier at your local u-pick field, you would have enforced the rules laid out by him/his employer. By letting your children break the rules, you’re teaching them that they can ala carte rules and requirements in life – and that’s a bad lesson to provide.
Just my $0.02, coming from experience with my much-younger half-brothers whom I helped raise, and now my own children, who are ages 9 and 11.
On a more positive note, your photos are lovely – and of course the children in them are, too. ๐
ha ha..love it..weighing her before and after! I too am guilty of ‘sampling’ the berries! been know to sample grapes in the store also once or twice..have to taste good before I buy them!
This is sweet! ๐
Luckily, all the places I have ever been to pick berries (apples, too) have been the kinds of places that *encourage* the kids to eat straight from the Earth. The beauty of kind farmers who choose to grow their foods in a way that is safe for everyone.
If you have never picked a bursting-with-life strawberry, warmed by the sun, straight from plant to mouth, I kind of feel a bit sad for you. It’s an experience!
I believe you are a good person. <3 This was a lovely post to read!
That was very sweet of you, thank you for taking the time to comment. I know what I am doing is wrong, in this case especially because of the cashiers request, and if she were eating bucket loads I get it, the kids a picky eater to begin with including a crazy small appetite, I would be surprised if we managed to sneak off with anymore than 6 or 7 blueberries. I think when it comes to parenting you pick and choose your battles, and in this case I didn’t see it as a battle but more of a innocent fun with no thought to actually breaking rules.
Ah well, I expected some back-lash in a round about way, you can’t win them all right? At least you guys can’t call me dishonest over here ๐
Honestly, thank you for taking the time to comment, and IG me your sweet picture it has set my week up for smiles and less worries for sure! Means the world. THANK YOU.

Krouse is the best! I’m sure they expect some to be eaten, especially with little ones.
Right? We visit there maybe 4 or 5 times a year, quite possibly more! We LOVE u-pick!

I too am sure that while they have that official rule, they expect some will be eaten. Especcially by kids since it would be hard to resist with the temptation right there..and who wants to argue about a kid eating fresh fruit of all things!
No arguments here, especially coming from a picky eater!

I can’t believe they have implemented this rule. So sad really! I probably would have obeyed best I could and made the kids work faster to finally get a taste of a blueberry lol. But still how hard is that ok the littles!!!
I hear yah, and totally respect your rule following ways!
Thanks for taking the time to comment D,
