If you know me, you know I love a good DIY. Something that not only allows me to customize what I am making to my personal preferences, but even quite possibly saving me a bunch of money. I was approached and asked to check out this homemade nail polish book, and really the title alone had be hooked. Really?! You can make your own polish? After further looking into it and learning that it can be done with a few simple ingredients I was all in. Sign me up! Send me the book, let’s get started!
Ordered some products I was going to want to have for this little DIY off of etsy and called my bestie up. Come over for big brother eviction night and let’s customize some nail polish?! Obviously she agree, she brought dessert and I setup all that we would need to make our dream colored nail polishes. The night got off to a great start thanks to her french vanilla mousse Lindsay brought and concluded with sparkles galor; recipe foe a great night in my mind.
Lindsay and I both chose to design a pink’ish hue of custom color with a third bottle of something that packed more glitz than the red carpet at the Oscars. Reaching always for our trusty little handbook, Homemade Nail Polish by Allison Rose Spiekermann, we learn the best concoctions and how to achieve the right balance of pigment or sparkle to suspension base.
…did you know you can make nail polish with eye shadow for a custom color and shimmer?
MAKING A SOLID COLOR {by mixing polishes} :: we chose to make polish based on a few existing colors we had and loved, mixing our base with polishes we already had making a new one-of-a-kind color for us only. I mixed 3 colors, in total with my base all from the pink family, while Lindsay mixed a pink and seafoam polish with her base. They both turned out incredible
MAKING A SPARKLE POLISH :: we wanted a show stopper of a polish that was sparkle based. With our suspension base we mixed 2 colored sparkles that were 2 different sizes, hoping for more of a dramatic look. Success!
MAKING A SOLID COLOR {from eye shadow} :: believe it or not this is done easily. Simply smashing up the shadow until you reach a powder consistency, adding a thinner, and finally a base. Crazy right, who knew? What a genius idea for when you can’t find the perfect hue of polish to match an outfit. Opens up tons of doors when you can also start looking down the makeup aisle.
Lindsay and I had one of the best times creating our custom colors, thanks to Homemade Nail Polishes for sending us a copy of their book. We learnt a lot, designed a lot, and plan on another girls night of custom colors {any excuse to spend time beautifying}. If you would love to get your own copy of the book Homemade Nail Polish, find it here, and in case you can’t buy your supplies locally, grab them here.
Disclosure :: I received a copy of the book to facilitate my review, however all opinions are my own.
Way cool! I didn’t know you could make you own polish!!!
